Cyberattacks continue to grow in frequency and sophistication, and ransomware remains one of the most disruptive threats facing organizations today. Whether targeting private businesses, public agencies, or educational institutions, ransomware attacks can quickly interrupt operations, restrict access to critical systems, and create significant financial and reputational challenges.

Ransomware is a type of malicious software that prevents organizations from accessing their data or systems and demands payment to restore access. In many cases, attackers also attempt to steal sensitive information, creating additional privacy, legal, and operational concerns.

For schools and other public organizations, the consequences can be particularly severe. Disruptions to student information systems, payroll, communications, financial operations, or other critical services can affect entire communities.

### Three Steps to Strengthen Your Defense

While no organization can eliminate cyber risk entirely, a few foundational practices can significantly improve resilience and recovery.

1. **Invest in Employee Awareness**
Many ransomware incidents begin with a phishing email, malicious link, or other social engineering tactic designed to trick users into providing access.

Regular [cybersecurity awareness training](https://www.keenan.com/property-and-casualty/training-and-compliance/) helps employees recognize suspicious activity and reinforces safe online behaviors. Creating a culture where users feel comfortable reporting potential threats can be just as important as the technology protecting your network.
2. **Keep Systems Updated**
Cybercriminals frequently target known software vulnerabilities. Timely application of security updates, patches, and antivirus protections helps close security gaps before they can be exploited.

Organizations should establish processes to regularly review and update systems, applications, and connected devices across their technology environment.
3. **Prioritize Backup and Recovery Planning**
If there is one lesson cybersecurity experts consistently emphasize, it is the importance of reliable backups.

A well-designed backup strategy can dramatically reduce the impact of a ransomware attack. Backups should be tested regularly, protected from unauthorized access, and stored in a way that supports recovery if primary systems are compromised. Just as important, organizations should have a documented incident response and recovery plan so key stakeholders understand their roles before an event occurs.

### Cyber Resilience Is More Than Technology

Protecting against ransomware requires a combination of people, processes, and technology. Employee training, cybersecurity planning, backup strategies, incident response procedures, and ongoing risk assessments all contribute to a stronger security posture.

Organizations that prepare in advance are often better positioned to recover quickly, minimize disruption, and continue serving their communities when cyber incidents occur.

### Start the Conversation

Cyber threats continue to evolve, and many organizations are reassessing whether their current safeguards, recovery plans, and cybersecurity resources remain sufficient.
